InnovUp, a member of WAINOVA, highlights the latest findings from the Social Innovation Monitor (SIM) and the Polytechnic University of Turin regarding Italy’s growing ecosystem of start-up incubators and accelerators. The sector now supports over 5,700 incubated start-ups, with nearly 5,000 employees and a turnover exceeding 600 million euros, reflecting substantial growth in both employment and financial performance.
The research identified 239 incubators and accelerators across Italy, with a concentration in the North-West, particularly Lombardy, followed by regions such as Emilia-Romagna and Lazio. Although the total number of incubators has slightly decreased, the sector has seen strong consolidation, with incubators continuing to play a pivotal role in job creation and economic development.
These incubators provide key services, including managerial support, physical spaces, and training, while also engaging in additional activities like event management, consultancy, and open innovation. Notably, 54% of incubators focus on startups with a significant social or environmental impact, particularly in sectors like health, well-being, and community development.
The Italian government has also introduced supportive measures, such as expanding certification to accelerators and offering an 8% tax credit for investments in start-ups, further driving the growth and social impact of the ecosystem.
